The phrase 'Think Global, Act Local' was first used in the context of environmental challenges - in order to improve our impact on the environment, it is more effective for an individual to reduce their own energy consumption than wait for global action. But what about in the context of business? Big companies such as McDonalds and Honda are successful on a global scale, but their products have to be tailored to the requirements of individual countries. Julian Amey, Principal Fellow at Warwick Manufacturing Group, argues that the key is not only to 'think global, act local', but also to 'share and network totally'.

Micro-manufacturing has received good attention globally in terms of its manufacturing methods/processes. One of the most popular micro-manufacturing processes is micro-forming. Many efforts have been focused on micro-forming, mainly on the micro-stamping process due to the process itself contributing numerous products, especially in its conventional macro-process.

Technology isn’t standing still. But while all of us are used to the rapid pace of change of IT, it might be a surprise to realise just how much ordinary manufacturing technologies are changing, as well. In many instances, that innovation is of course down to leveraging manufacturing technologies with IT capabilities. In other cases, while IT plays a role, the core underlying manufacturing technology represents a genuine advance. But in every case, the technologies that I’m showcasing here are either already being adopted, or close to being ready for mass adoption. And, what’s more, with a clear and evident ROI.
